The American Board of Forensic Anthropology (ABFA) defines forensic anthropology as “the analysis of skeletal, badly decomposed, or otherwise unidentified human remains… to aid in the detection of crime.” The career of forensic anthropology has been dramatically glamorized by movies and television shows. These shows depict an attractive anthropologist working with an attractive FBI agent who, in an action packed chase “take down bad guys” for a living. This misconceived conception of the profession has drawn many people to the career. Unfortunately, these portrayals of the career fail to mention the rigorous amount of work the profession calls for and the rarity of the career. Forensic Anthropology is an extremely beneficial but demanding career. To be a successful anthropologist, one needs patience, self-discipline, and passion.
